Helpful TipsFrom time to time, we'll post bits of information here that might be helpful to you. Our goal is to give you ALL of the information that you need to be happy, safe and well-satisfied with our products.Burning Oil: Using a diffuser to scent is growing in popularity. While you CAN just burn the straight oil, here's a safer and (in our opinion) better way. First fill a coffee cup with water and warm in the microwave for 30 seconds or so. Put the warmed water into your burning vessel or diffuser. About 2/3 full. Then, add a few drops of oil. Obviously, since oil and water don't mix, the oil will float on top. Light your tealight or plug in your warmer (we really recommend electric warmers). Wait a few minutes to let the diffuser 'get going'. If you do not have a strong enough fragrance, add a few drops more oil. And continue until the scent throw is perfect for you. Always add fragrance in small increments, because a little goes a long way. And once added, it is virtually impossible to remove without wasting it. NOTE: if using an electric warmer, it isn't necessary to warm your water first. But we've found that warming water before using a tealight burner is the most efficient way to get scent in your room without 'wasting' the tealight's energy. Burning oils this way has a few advantages. First, as the water simmers, it will take molecules of the fragrance with it into the room. The fragrance never gets hot enough to smoke (which is the first stage before 'flash fire'...and that is definitely not good) and so the fragrance isn't affected by undue heat. You may have smelled fragrances 'burning' in the other way and often the fragrance smells smoky. And when you are burning Rose (for example) a smoky note is not desirable! Second, using water will greatly reduce the number of times you'll have to thoroughly clean your burning vessel. And lastly, it adds moisture to the air. This moisture does help in keeping down static electricity and also is very kind to skin and hair! Yes, the amount added is slight, but every little bit helps! Candle advice: for optimal benefit, candles should be burned for about 1 hour per inch of width. So our jar candles ought to be burned for about 4 hours at a time. Votives should burn about 2 hours. Burning candles for shorter amounts of time can create the dreaded 'tunneling' because the melt pool doesn't grow large enough to touch the sides of the jar which melts across the entire candle. Burning for far longer times can, and usually does, shorten the candle's lifespan. Why? Well, as the wax is consumed, the wick lengthens. A longer wick produces a larger flame, and a larger flame consumes wax faster and faster! So, to get the most out of your candles, after burning for the recommended time, blow out the candle. Allow the wax to harden. And trim the wick to about 1/4" before relighting. This extra attention will give you the most of your candle purchase. Of course, never allow candles to burn unattended. And keep careful watch if burning around small children or pets. Candles are like everything else in life: wonderful if treated with respect. But a potential hazard if not. We want you to be safe! |
